I photograph nouns and the adjectives that define them. Whatever emotion is behind the image I am capturing, I try to convey that raw feeling through my photographs. The whimsical feeling of starting a new chapter in life through my engagement pictures, the breathtaking moment a groom has when he sees his bride for the first time and the wind gets knocked out of him, or the cool draft of air a waterfall releases as it hits the back of the legs on a hot summer afternoon.
I grew up driving back and forth between Colorado and California several times a year and as I made the drive, I watched the different landscapes transition from one to another out the passenger window. I didn’t have a camera at the time, but I used my mother’s video camera to film as we went by. Away went the video camcorder and along came a 35mm in high school that I used to photograph bands. I started college as a film major thinking I’d like to go back to the camcorder, but after a professor saw my photography work, he suggested I switch to art with an emphasis in photography. Having a degree in art has allowed me to refine my technique, opened doors for different areas of photography, and introduced me to digital.
After college, I had the opportunity to have my fine art photography featured at the Art Murmur Gallery (now Compact Space L.A.) in downtown Los Angeles, assist wedding photographers, photograph celebrity sports events and bands for promotional media, and create virtual tours with my real estate photography. After being a second shooter for a few weddings, I began to shoot them on my own and started my business. Now, as a graphic designer, I use a combination of my photography and editing skills to give couples pictures they will hopefully cherish for a lifetime. While I have shot several weddings, any type of photography allows me to capture those nouns and compliment them with their adjectives.
